Be Bold, Work Hard, Give Back

My father passed away peacefully on May 14, 2021, at the age of 92. Since then, I have been reflecting on his life. The values he lived remain relevant today.

Be Bold (When Necessary)

My father was a village boy and the oldest in his family. He left the village at age 15 with a family friend’s referral note to find a job in Mumbai, so he could provide for his family and siblings. He was scared but bold. He did not even know the language spoken by most people in Mumbai. He spoke broken English and Hindi to get around. In those days (the early 40’s), it was like going to a foreign and strange country. Plus, it was a very long way from home. His village is about 800 miles south of Mumbai and in those days a train or bus journey took three days. However, he was willing to be bold for the sake of his family.

Work Hard

Once in Mumbai, he worked hard and grew up the ranks from an administrative assistant to a successful businessman. He built a small empire around an export-import business dealing with natural resources such as coal and manganese ore. He believed in being very honest and persevering until you succeed.

Give Back

As he became more successful, Dad was quick to help others. One of the best examples is his home caretaker. Dad brought Shashi from his village over 30 years ago to help with household chores and to run errands. He helped this young man learn marketable skills so Shashi could earn more money working in the Middle East. After a few years, Shashi came back to India and asked my dad if he could work for him. So, Dad made him his estate’s trust manager and today he manages every aspect of Dad’s estate and finances. Shashi respected my dad a lot and treated him as he would his own father. Dad not only helped family and friends, he also funded the entire school and vocational education of two underprivileged children.

Thanks for indulging me in sharing a little about my dad. As you may be able to guess, I am very proud to have him as a father and am glad that the values he lived have influenced who I have become.
