Organizing my desk feels therapeutic to me. But I realized it has other benefits too.
As I revamped my workspace, I wasnât expecting it to magically transform into a picturesque sanctuary. But as I moved things around and added some of my favorite things, thatâs exactly what happened. And it made a world of difference to my mood and focus!
For those of us working from home (remote/hybrid model), getting into âwork modeâ can be challenging amidst the domestic humdrum. However, we have the power to set up our space exactly where and how we want. But are you making the most of it?
Tidying up and de-cluttering is just the first step. Itâs definitely a start but thereâs much more you can doâwithout breaking the bank. These SMALL improvements can make a BIG impact:
1. Make It Lit!
A nicely lit environment can brighten up your space and outlook, literally! And if itâs natural lighting against a window backdrop, even better! Sunlight is said to be the best antidote for depression, seasonal affective disorder, and overall mood.
But if that isnât possible, consider brightening your space with artificial lighting. And get your daily dose of sunshine by taking a walk instead in the AM or post lunch. Bonus: morning sunlight exposure can boost cortisol, the stress hormone that gives bursts of energy so you can accomplish your tasks.
2. Own your Space – Get Creatively Crazy!
Having inspirational quotes and pictures of loved ones on our desks is great. But how about adding fun things for a bit of spark? Some ideas: oil diffuser, fidget toys (squeezable stress ball or bubble wrap), scented candles, coloring book, Rubikâs cube, canvas for painting, dartboard to keep you on your toes, or even colored putty like Play-Doh. No one will judge you So, go as crazy as you can!
As a cinephile, I have a list of the most awaited movies on my to-do board. It keeps me going on especially long days. The bottom-line is to infuse personality into your work corner.
3. Go Green
Heard the phrase âbring the outside inâ? ClichÊd but it works.
Place potted plants around your desk. If you think watering them is a lot of work, even a miniature bamboo plant for your desk would do (you could water it from your flask as it would need just a tiny bit to survive).
4. Add a Pop of Color
Complement your workspace with a bright color theme. Pick colorful desk organizers, artifacts, or wall art. Feeling creative? Paint a section or even the entire wall with street-style graffiti!
Finally, remember: beautifying your workspace is no use if itâs messy or cluttered. Keep it clean, organized, and fun. It can help you detach from the home setting and the distractions it brings. So, get creative and individualize your workspace to remain motivated day after day!
