The Bear and the Wasp

A MedTech Parable About Engineering, Nature, and Staying the Course

In the medical device industry, teams often spend years developing technologies intended to improve or preserve human life. Project plans are carefully constructed. Risk analyses are documented. Verification protocols are approved. Timelines are negotiated.

Then nature arrives.

Not necessarily in the form of storms, earthquakes, or floods. More often, nature appears as uncertainty, variability, and the unexpected.

A supplier changes a manufacturing process.

A reagent behaves differently than predicted.

A calibration study produces an outlier nobody anticipated.

A regulatory reviewer asks a question no one is prepared for.

Nature rarely asks permission before entering the room.

Recently, a colleague relocated from Colorado to Montana. She joked that she had escaped the mountain lions of one wilderness only to discover new challenges waiting in another. One day, while presenting to a client over video, a black bear wandered past her office window. At nearly the same moment, her young son was stung by a wasp.

She never broke stride.

The presentation continued.

The client never knew.

Only afterward did she share what had happened.

The story is amusing, but it contains a lesson far larger than bears and wasps.

The bear represents the obvious risk.

Large.

Visible.

Impossible to ignore.

Every medical device program encounters bears.

A major design flaw.

A failing verification study.

A critical supplier disruption.

A missed requirement.

A looming regulatory deadline.

Teams immediately recognize these threats because they command attention.

The wasp represents something different.

Small.

Unexpected.

Easy to dismiss.

Yet capable of causing significant disruption.

Many projects are delayed not by the bear everyone anticipated, but by the wasp no one noticed.

An undocumented assumption.

A misunderstood user need.

A calibration traceability gap.

An overlooked software requirement.

A missing design review artifact.

Tiny events often create the largest consequences.

Nature does not distinguish between the importance of large and small disturbances. Both affect outcomes.

Medical device development operates under the same principle.

The laws governing successful products are not invented by engineering teams. They are discovered.

Gravity exists whether we acknowledge it or not.

Biological variability exists whether we measure it or not.

Human factors influence outcomes whether we document them or not.

Metrological traceability exists whether we understand it or not.

Risk accumulates whether we choose to see it or not.

These realities are not regulatory requirements.

They are laws of nature.

Regulations merely attempt to ensure we respect them.

The most successful engineering organizations eventually learn that their role is not to conquer nature.

Their role is to work with it.

The strongest products are not created by forcing reality to match assumptions.

They are created by continuously adapting assumptions to reality.

That is why resilience often matters more than perfection.

The engineer who remains calm when a study fails.

The scientist who follows unexpected data rather than defending a preferred theory.

The quality professional who welcomes difficult questions.

The project manager who adjusts course without losing direction.

These individuals understand something fundamental.

Progress is rarely a straight line.

Nature has never operated that way.

Rivers do not flow in straight lines.

Forests do not grow in perfect symmetry.

Biology itself is a system of adaptation, feedback, variation, and continuous adjustment.

Engineering excellence follows the same pattern.

The future of medical device development will increasingly involve artificial intelligence. AI will analyze data faster than humans. It will identify patterns, generate options, and reveal connections that may otherwise remain hidden.

Yet AI cannot remove bears.

AI cannot eliminate wasps.

AI cannot repeal the laws of nature.

It can help us recognize them sooner.

It can help us prepare more effectively.

But human judgment remains responsible for choosing the path forward.

The engineer remains accountable.

The scientist remains accountable.

The organization remains accountable.

That responsibility does not disappear simply because the tools become more powerful.

If anything, it becomes more important.

The real objective is not to create a world without uncertainty.

Such a world does not exist.

The objective is to develop teams capable of moving forward despite uncertainty.

To remain steady when the mountain lion appears.

To remain focused when the bear walks by.

To remain composed when the wasp stings.

And to continue advancing technologies that improve human lives despite the challenges encountered along the way.

Because nature follows us everywhere.

Into forests.

Into laboratories.

Into manufacturing facilities.

Into conference rooms.

Into design reviews.

Into regulatory submissions.

And ultimately into every medical device that reaches a patient.

The adventure is not avoiding nature.

The adventure is learning how to work alongside it.

That may be the most important lesson hidden inside the story of the bear and the wasp.

Not that unexpected things happen.

But that meaningful progress belongs to those who continue moving forward when they do.

In MedTech, success is rarely determined by the absence of bears, mountain lions, or wasps. It is determined by the ability to stay the course when they appear. The laws of nature are always present. Great engineering does not fight them—it learns from them, adapts to them, and ultimately transforms that understanding into better outcomes for humanity.
